Last Midnight India Declares Its Taxation Reform

Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999 coined this term Goods And Services Tax as the solution to multiple indirect taxes prevailing in India. While the need of such reform was envisioned by Vishwanath Pratap Singh in 1986 inside Indian Parliament, it took India 21 years to fix the problem of taxes. After Demonetization, the India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has yet again proven that he is not here to escape tough steps.

We are reporting from the city of Varanasi, where there is no chaos as showcased by most of the Indian National Media.

Here are seven quick facts about #GSTREFORM :

  1. Goods and Services Tax, in short GST, made most of its progress during three years of Pranab Mukherjee as Finance Minister.
  2. Apart from Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram, almost all past Governments have partially contributed to the reform.
  3. CGST is the paid directly to the Central Government.
  4. SGST is the tax paid to the State Government for products bought within the state.
  5. IGST is the tax paid to the Centre, in case the product is sold outside the state.
  6. Once IGST is paid the products can cross as many Indian State borders.
  7. This reform fractures the very backbone of illegal stocking, cross state harassment by authorities and black money trading.

Litmus News sources have predicted that the Financial Year calculations shall start from January from coming year. This gives the ideal six month run to test this new tax reform. We are calling it a test not because it can in any case fail but give the economy around six months to get accustomed to new taxation structure.

Every buyer would prefer to buy from an entity that has a GSTIN, from individuals to large corporates and even Government. The benefit is clearly the refunds that would come back from the Central and State Governments. GST comes in a relief for most of the unstructured industries producing indigenous goods but only selling locally. Early adopters of GSTIN registration, shall find themselves being preferred over other players, thus opening the doors to sell across states and even internationally.

Congratulations to all fellow Indians on this historic moment of implementation of Goods and Services Tax.

Edit : We recommend our readers to be aware of rumours spread by large industrialists, communists and other anti-national sources.

It has been a while the “breaking news” of Nobel Peace prize to Mr. Kailash Satyarthi. Things perish into history, sooner than we think. And therefore, the need to remind a few things to all Indians about him.

He gave up his career as an electrical engineer. He began his mission of fighting for children’s rights in 1980 i.e he has been at it for 34 years
now. 2 of his colleagues got murdered and he himself got attacked once. Which means forget the Nobel prize, being alive itself is a huge award for him.

He won his first award in 1984 and since then he won about 8 awards. And guess how many of those awards were given by his motherland for his yeoman service? ZERO!

During these 34 years approximately 4000 Padma awards and about 25 Bharat Ratnas and many more awards have been “doled” out, but Mr Satyarthi is not one of them. Because you see our standards are very high!! During the same period dozens of ” eminent” people have been nominated to Rajya Sabha and to many other such ” prestigious” positions. But once again Mr Satyarthi did not qualify for any of them. No PM ever felt it important to call him for discussions ( even as they were meeting Film stars) and ask him what needs to be done to give children their rights!!

And guess who nominated him for the Nobel prize this year? Indian
Parliament? BJP? Congress? RSS? VHP? MP government ( his home state)? Rajiv gandhi Foundation? NO. He was nominated by EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT! So in nutshell he won this Nobel peace prize entirely due to his efforts and despite the Government/Media/Civil Society ( largely, because some
people from the civil society did help him along). But today we all want a piece of his fame and glory. Who knows there might be a queue of Bollywood producers outside his door!!

Did someone say Peepli Live-II?

The message is crystal clear. It is shameful that we, as a nation, don’t appreciate our own, till the rest of the world hold up the light right on our face!. Shame on our national character. Also, on the media. Because it is busy reporting which silly politico said what about another idiot, instead of high lighting the good and deserving amongst us. I must confess that there were many ( including myself ) who wondered “Kailash who?“, when we heard of this year’s Nobel Peace prize. Now, the media and nation is going gaga. Even that fraud editor, Shekhar Gupta , has condescended enough to “Walk the Talk ” with Kailash Satyarthi.

Indeed, road accident is one of the scariest things anybody can have in life. I feel that our focus should be on eliminating the number of accidents in addition to implementing laws. Talk Shows like Satyamev Jayate are a big inspiration for us in which its last episode was based on road accidents.

I would like to say we don’t need a new law on road safety to protect all categories of road users including pedestrians until we start to follow the current ones. New rules are easier to make than to follow and I think it is a problem on both ends. As citizens, we break them and as Govt., we don’t enforce them strictly enough. So there should be an effort from both the sides to come to a fruitful result.

Govt. should implement e-governance to road transport department and fool proof monitoring mechanism in vehicle which will be constantly monitoring the activities of the driver including the speed at which he is driving the vehicle and will be keeping a record of the activities. If this can be implemented as a law then casual driving can be penalised easily. While Govt. officials are not strict about it, people get more used to breaking them without thinking how it is going to affect others and knowing they are not going to get in trouble with it or even if they do they will get out of it through money power or “high contacts”. So I think small things like this can help in a big manner because if one car jumps a red light and all other follow…same goes if one car stops in middle of the road the cars behind will HAVE TO STOP.

Most of the road accidents occur because of rash driving, usually parents give bikes and cars to their children at a very early age. I would say students should be given road safety classes from an early age… road safety and driving classes as well as first aid should be incorporated into the school curriculum!! Traffic violators should be heavily penalized and their licence should be revoked the first time they are caught.

If a jumbo jet full of passengers would crash every day in India, it would not be acceptable at all. However, we have equivalent number of fatalities on roads every single day and nobody bothers. We should start fighting for this cause especially on our national highways where one-third of the road fatalities take place. At least we can start from national highways.

The latest story from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) disclosed that 52% of the world’s animals have gone vanished in 40 years.

As human population has nearly doubled itself, wildlife numbers have decreased by more than half in just 40 years (1970-2010). Let me first define this survey before getting to my story. A survey is carried by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) over 3,000 vertebrate species and the reports track the growth or decline of more than 10,000 populations.

The report is titled “Living Planet Report 2014” and states that the population of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish around the world has declined to 52% between 1970 and 2014.

Some unfortunate but true facts are given below to make an idea that how badly our wildlife is extricating:

  • Elephants in Africa which could be extinct within our lifetime.
  • Marine turtles have seen an 80% drop in numbers.

I am sure you are wondering: “so how are humans responsible?”. This all is because of rising amount of carbon and reacting nitrogen that is badly effecting by degrading lands, rivers and oceans. Also there is an increasing stress on limited water supplies.

Carter Roberts, president of WWF said, “We are gradually destroying our planet’s ability to support our (way of) life”.

“What are not complicated are the clear trends we are seeing- 39% of terrestrial wildlife gone, 39% of marine wildlife gone and 76% of freshwater wildlife gone- all in the past 40 years.”

Presenting you some detailed data of WWF report:

  • There is biggest fall in the vertebrate wildlife is in Latin America.
  • The population of lion in one reserve is down in Ghana.
  • World broadly, habitat loss and hunting have reduced tigers from 100,000 a century ago to just 3,000.
  • Defeats of natural habitats, misuse through hunting or fishing and climate change are some of the reasons to have hiked the decline.
  • In West Africa, forest felling has limited elephants to their historic range.
  • Most horrible decline is among populations of freshwater species, which fell by 76% over the four decades to 2010, while marine and terrestrial numbers both fell by 39%.

How we humans can so be cruel to our own nature that we are continuously ignoring the losses of our wildlife.

The oil which is exported or imported through different countries worldwide often counters the problem of leakage in oil tankers which is the main reason of marine life destruction. I just want to explain by giving this example that our leniency in not keeping a regular check on oil tankers condition causes drastic loss to our priceless marine life.

Not only marine but in every stage of biosphere only we are the cause of destroying our ecosystems by harming our natural wildlife.

  • Deforestation effects land animals
  • Dumping harmful waste in oceans, rivers and wet lands causes severe damage to marine.
  • Industrialisation, smoke emitting industries causes bad effects to terrestrial wildlife.

We are the cause and we are the only remedy.

India’s counter-terror force, the National Security Guard or NSG, has warned of a joint attack by Al Qaeda and ISIS or Islamic State on metropolitan cities. Serious concern over incidents of waiving of ISIS flag in Srinagar, BJP on Thursday said such actions should be dealt with strictly and the “threat” must not be “undermined”. A top army commander in Kashmir had on Wednesday expressed concern about the recent display of ISIS flags in Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said that ISIS has no presence in his state.  “You have to understand that no ISIS group has been identified so far in the Valley. The flag of the ISIS was waved by some idiots “he said.

“You have to understand that no ISIS group has been identified so far in the Valley. The flag of the ISIS was waved by some idiots which do not mean that ISIS has any presence in Kashmir. Unfortunately, some channels have tried to make an issue out of this and drag me into this as if we are not doing anything on this”, Omar had told reporters in New Delhi. Now that leaves us wondering “Isn’t this similar stand that we took some years back for other separatists?” By the way those outfits are now more important for Pakistan delegates visiting India, than External Affairs ministry.

The BJP leader said, “Had J&K government acted on the day the ISIS recruits and idolisers raised their ugly heads and crushed them with heavy hands, things in the Valley today would have been somewhat different”. While those are strong words and its easier said, there has to be a plan to counter the increasing focus of these terror organisations due to the neighbours’ influence.

“Terrorist groups from across the Line of control, like the Lashkar, Jaish, Harqat and IM, if they have a strong bond with ISIL or Al-Qaeda, then there will be a higher level of threat. The apprehension that we have is that if they do have a combined kind of strategy,” said NSG Director General JN Choudhury today.

It is quite amazing situation that DG NSG is giving out such an intelligence appreciation on his own! Where have RAW & IB gone? Our Intelligence department and defence should become alert now and need to take some deep actions against these terror attacks so that once again our country shall not face any harbour condition. This kind of waving of their flags on border is unfortunately creating terror in the heart of the natives and Indians at large.
It is serious matter, fire should be controlled and smarter actions should be taken. ISIS doesn’t have any ideology. They just want Blood and are a threat to civilizations. No religions teach to kill anyone and still they are able to generate fanfare around the globe among vulnerable youngsters. It is simple to understand that terrorists are like a cancer to the society. It should be treated like a serious disease. We have the results that what has happened to Iran and Syria.

We ask Government and Citizen to take hardest action again anyone who supports ISIS.

No Name calling, No hatred, No Political agenda.

This pilot hit the nail right on the head in his open letter.

A newspaper stated that some Muslim doctor is saying we are profiling him because he has been checked three times while getting on an airplane.

The following is a letter from a pilot. This well-spoken man, who is a pilot with American Airlines , says what is in his heart, beautifully.

I’ve been trying to say this since 9-11-01

But you worry me.

I wish you didn’t. I wish when I walked down the streets of this country that I love,

that your color and culture still blended with the beautiful human landscape we enjoy in this country.

But you don’t blend in anymore. I notice you, and it worries me.

I notice you because I can’t help it anymore. People from your homelands, professing to be Muslims have been attacking and killing my fellow citizens and our friends for more than 20 years now.

I don’t fully understand their grievances and hate, but I know that nothing can justify the inhumanity of their attacks.

On September 11, Arab-Muslims hijacked four jetliners in my country. They cut the throats of women in front of children and brutally stabbed to death others.

They took control of those planes and crashed them into buildings , killing thousands of proud fathers, loving sons, wise grandparents, elegant daughters, best friends,

Favorite coaches, fearless public servants, and children’s mothers.

The Palestinians celebrated, the Iraqis were overjoyed as was most of the Arab world.

So I notice you now. I don’t want to be worried.

I don’t want to be consumed with rage, hate and prejudice that has destroyed the soul of these terrorists.

But I need your help. As a rational American, trying to protect my country and family in an irrational and unsafe world, I must know how to tell the difference between you , and the Arab/Muslim terrorist.

How do I differentiate between the true Arab/Muslim Americans and the Arab/Muslim terrorists in our communities who are attending our schools, enjoying our parks, and living in OUR communities under the protection of OUR constitution while they plot the next attack that will slaughter MORE of the same good neighbors and children?

The events of September 11 changed the answer.

It is not MY responsibility to determine which of you embraces our great country, with ALL of its religions , with ALL of its different citizens, with all of its faults.

It is time for every Arab/Muslim in this country to determine it for me.

I want to know, I DEMAND to know and I have a right to know whether or not you love America……..Do you pledge allegiance to its flag?

Do you proudly display it in front of your house, or on your car?

Do you pray in your many daily prayers that Allah will bless this nation; that He will protect it and let it prosper? Or do you pray that Allah will destroy it

in one of your Jihads?

Are you thankful for the freedom that this nation affords? A freedom that was paid for by the blood of hundreds of thousands of patriots who gave their lives for this country?

Are you willing to preserve this freedom by also paying the ultimate sacrifice? Do you love America? If this is your commitment, then I need YOU to start letting ME know about it.

Your Muslim leaders in this nation should be flooding the media at this time with hard facts on your faith, and what hard actions YOU are taking as a community and as a religion to protect the United States of America.

Please no more benign overtures of regret for the death of the innocent, because I worry about who you regard as innocent….No more benign overtures of condemnation for unprovoked attacks, because I worry about what is unprovoked to you . I am not interested in any more sympathy; I am interested only in action.

What will you do for American – our great country at this time of crisis, at this time of war?

I want to see Arab-Muslims waving the AMERICAN flag in the streets. I want to hear you chanting “Allah Bless America’. I want to see a commitment of money, time and emotion to the victims of this butchering and to this nation as a whole.

The FBI has a list of over 400 people they want to talk to regarding the World Trade Center attack. Many of these people live and socialize right now in Muslim communities.

You know them. You know where they are. Hand them over to us, NOW!

But I have seen little even approaching this sort of action. Instead I have seen an already closed secretive community close even tighter.

You have disappeared from the streets. You have posted armed security guards at your facilities. You have threatened lawsuits. You have screamed for protection from reprisals.

The very few Arab/Muslims representatives that HAVE appeared in the media were defensive and equivocating. They seemed more concerned with making sure that the United States proves who

was responsible before taking action. They seemed more concerned with protecting their fellow Muslims from Violence directed towards them in the United States and abroad than they did with supporting our country and denouncing ‘leaders’ like Khadafi, Hussein, Assad, Khomani, Farrakhan, and Arafat.

If the true teachings of Islam proclaim tolerance and peace and love for all people then I want chapter and verse from the Koran and statements from popular Muslim leaders to back it up.

What good is it if the teachings in the Koran are good, pure, and true when your ‘leaders’ ARE teaching fanatical interpretations, terrorism and intolerance?

It matters little how good Islam SHOULD BE if huge numbers of the world’s Muslims interpret the teachings of Mohammed incorrectly and adhere to a degenerative form of the religion.

A form whole structure is built upon a foundation of violence, death and suicide.

A form whose members are recruited from prisons around the world. A form whose members ( some as young as five years old) are seen day after day, week in and week out, year after year marching around the world, burning effigies of our presidents, burning the American flag, shooting weapons into the air. A form whose members convert from a peaceful religion, only to take up arms against the great United States of America, the country of their birth.

A form whose rules are so twisted , that their travelling members refuse to show their faces at airport security checkpoints, in the name of Islam.

We will NEVER allow the attacks of September 11 2001 , or any others for that matter, to take away that which is so precious to us – our rights under the greatest constitution in the world.

I want to know where every Arab Muslim in this country stands and I think it is my right and the right of every true citizen of this country to DEMAND it.

A right paid for by the blood of thousands of my brothers and sisters who died protecting the very constitution that is protecting you and your family.

I am pleading with you to let me know. I want you here as my brother, my neighbor, my friend, as a fellow American….But there can be no grey areas or ambivalence regarding you allegiance, and it is up to YOU, to show ME, where YOU stand. Until then, “YOU WORRY ME’

We the members of LITMUS NEWS would like to congratulate the entire clan of the Modi sarkaar for its upcoming glorious victory. Time and again BJP has proved that the Modi sarkaar campaign has been strong enough to achieve repeated victory. Yet again, strong inputs are coming that BJP has so far performed well in elections in all important 5 state elections in UP, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. A clear majority NDA government is expected from all states, except maybe Goa.

BJP is using complex social listening tools that can clearly state the mood in the region. Social Media team of BJP is busy consistently sharing the mood of the voters to its top brass. As per their indications, recap of Haryana and Maharashtra results is expected. Modi used Twitter to share and express his happiness, he tweeted: “Historic results! A matter of immense happiness & pride for BJP. I salute our Karyakartas for their tireless efforts.” Next tweet: “Thanks to the people of Haryana for giving us the opportunity to fulfil their dreams & to take Haryana’s development journey to new heights.” Third tweet: “My gratitude to the people of Maharashtra. We are committed to Maharashtra’s progress & creating a Maharashtra the world will be proud of.” Sources state, that such tweets are expected from the Prime Minister soon after election results.

He has secured respect and love from the Indians with his bold actions on corruption and national security. Digital India, Startup India, Sukanya Yojna, PMKVY, Jan Awas Yojna and the list of yojnas goes on and on. The factor that matters the most is that its just been three years since he has taken over the prime spot in national politics. Brand Modi is big enough for the party to sail through these coming elections.

Keep tuned for more updates, as we get better insights as we head closer to the results !!

Corporates which have employed women at senior levels have shown better women provide better financial returns than those without them. Not because women on board gives your company a pleasant image outside but because they are capable to uphold their post. Not only me as a women saying this but also a TOI-commissioned study on the relation between companies with women on their boards and profitability justifies this.

A study of return on equity (ROE) data of top 100 Indian companies (BSE 100) by Randstad, a leading HR services provider, also speaks that companies with women on their boards have a positive impact on ROE.

According to the analysis a private sector company helped ROE rise by 4.4% in 2014 over the last year only because they are having the board of professional CEO with a fusion of both men and women.

On the other hand, a parallel firm with a men-only board saw its ROE rise by a mere 1.8% in the same period.

Nearly 50% of the Indian population involves women and an even advanced percentage of them are decision makers in purchasing consumer products. Vivek Gambhir, MD of GCPL, who’s current ROE is about 20%, whereas the sector median is around 11% says, “It just makes sound business sense to have adequate levels of representation of both genders. Our board discussions are a lot richer as a result of having a diverse representation on the board.”

“Approximately 50% of the world’s population is women. If we have to harness the full power of human imagination, we must reflect that diversity in all aspects of business”, said Vijay Govindarajan, management guru and Coxe Distinguished Professor at Tuck School of Business. He also stated that diversity is the key to maximizing mega business opportunities.

Chanda Kochhar, MD & CEO of ICICI Bank says, “It’s a relatively recent phenomenon. This is the culmination of a social process which saw women starting to take up careers about 30 years ago. It takes time to build a career”. She also stresses the need for gender diversity but feels there are two or three factors due to which there aren’t too many women on company boards. “You have only about 20 women for every 100 qualified job applicants. Further, many women drop out of the workforce after a few years”, she added.

Rohini Anand, senior VP & Global Chief Diversity Officer, Sodexo stated that when an organization gets women on its board, there is a trickledown effect with respect to gender balance as it puts pressure on boards to bring more women into the organization.

According to reports, board diversity has improved in almost every country and every sector, rolling from 9.6% in 2010 to closely 12.7% at the end of 2013. This reveals that the 2013 sector-adjusted ROE of companies with minimum one female board member was 12.2% as compared to 10.1% for those with nil representation.

It’s heartening to see corporates favouring a gender balance at all levels of the organisation and doing recruitments based only on capabilities instead of a gender bias.
